Stuart Richardson replied to the topic CS lens shutter speeds in the forum S Lenses 13 years, 2 months ago
Just as a counter, I have noticed rather real differences between the S2 lenses on a good tripod with the mirror pre-released and with it not pre-released. If you are using a tripod anyway, it is best practice to use the mirror pre-release. I have noticed it most on the 120mm lens at slow speeds (1s to 1/30th etc), but in general I would say…[Read more]

Stuart Richardson replied to the topic Any ideas on the purple line in the following images? in the forum S2 13 years, 2 months ago
Hi Arif,
Unluckily, I have had this before on 2 DMR's, the M9 and on Imacon and Hasselblad scanners. This is a function of CCD's and how they work. As crazy as it sounds, what is most likely happening here is that a random cosmic ray has struck one of the CCD pixel components and shorted it out. This causes a chain reaction down the pixel array…[Read more] -
Stuart Richardson replied to the topic Replacing the focusing screen in the forum S2 13 years, 2 months ago
It looks like it is just like the R9, only bigger. If that is the case, it is not too hard. You just need to be quite delicate and careful. The screen is usually a little easier to get out than to get in. The hardest part is generally releasing the new screen once it is in the proper place in the metal frame. You need to let go with the tweezers…[Read more]

Thanks very much Jim. I will give that a try next time as well, and see how it goes!

Stuart Richardson replied to the topic Strap for S2 in the forum S2 13 years, 3 months ago
I have used black Tamrac N-45's for my larger/heavier cameras for years. They are durable and have a soft foam shoulder pad covered in suede. The foam keeps them soft, the suede keeps them from slipping. They are fully adjustable and have quick release latches to take the strap off when you are working on a tripod. Mine are both going on seven or…[Read more]

Stuart Richardson replied to the topic What do you do with moire in the S2? in the forum S2 13 years, 3 months ago
Ok, well I found what I was hoping for, and the color problem is mostly solved. I found a tutorial by Patrick Lavoie on photo.net, and it seems to get rid of the color moire at least, but not the pattern. Still, it is much better and less distracting. You lose some saturation, but it is better than simply desaturating.
The procedure is as…[Read more]

Thank you both for the help. I am sorry I did not reply sooner. I left town right after I posted the thread, and then forgot to come back to it.
David — I will consider doing that next time, though I still appreciate the ease of just focusing on that which I want in focus, and taking the shot. But in this case, it may indeed be better to…[Read more]

Stuart Richardson replied to the topic Suggestions for feature additions in future S2 firmware updates in the forum S2 13 years, 4 months ago
Ok, thank you for the explanation. I am not trying to say you or allegretto's suggestions are not valid, I was just trying to understand them, as I could not see any reason why they would be needed. For example, deleting an image is not something I would ever worry about…conversely, I would rather have the test shot on the card just in case the…[Read more]

Why wouldn't you just take a photo and then delete it? It seems like it would accomplish the same thing, only without any buttons or special features.
As for a true RAW histogram, have you seen any deficiency in the regular histogram that makes this necessary? I am curious to hear about any particular issues, because I have not noticed any…[Read more]

To me, the M9 P says, people like basic black, and to be able to blend in, not stand out in a crowd. It's the style of shooting many M9 fans do, less is more.
Totally agree. And…[Read more]

Stuart Richardson replied to the topic problem with S2 image file printing with Epson 7910 in the forum S2 13 years, 5 months ago
If it is not too complex, I would try regenerating the S2 TIFF and processing it again. I use a 9900 for work, and have not really had this problem. There are so many dialog boxes, settings and things to keep straight, however, that it is likely something is getting left out or set wrong. If that is the case, it might be easier to just start from…[Read more]

There is actually no question here. It is 100% certain that they are star trails and not an error with the camera. This is just the behavior of the planet at night!

Take it from an aurora photographer…those are star trails. Your camera is perfect (well, at least in this way). We are on a spinning rock…if you want stars to be point sources (especially on 37.5mp), you need very short exposure times (just a few seconds) or a tracking tripod (don't even know what they are called) like the ones used in astronomy.

I am using a really right stuff TVC-33 and the BH-55. No complaints at all. That said, I tend to leave it at the studio and bring a gitzo 2 series and bh-40 unless it is a serious outing. I did some long exposures of the aurora from my balcony as a test, and they came out quite sharp, even with the 2 series. I have not tested extensively though.…[Read more]

Stuart Richardson replied to the topic Right Angle Finder in the forum S2 13 years, 6 months ago
I have to agree with him. They can't even produce enough lenses to meet demand…the last thing they should be devoting resources to is something like a right angle finder, which will only appeal to a very small and specific set of users. I don't mean to offend either of you with that, but it is not an item that many people use on a regular…[Read more]

Yes, of course, the focal plane shutter! Not sure how I could have overlooked that! It also opens up some other nice options, like barrel lenses. I can see things like aero-ektars and process lenses could be fun to play with. Just some questions out of curiosity, David…what is the widest lens you can focus to infinity with using this kind of setup? I suppose it would support basically any 4×5 lens as long as it was not too huge…

Thanks for the information David! That photo looks very well sharpened too. I will experiment with higher levels and see if I can't be won over. I will have to see how it works in big prints too, as that is my main criteria…I usually use photokit's output sharpener in tandem, so it may act differently if the capture sharpening technique is different…

Thanks David,
I read that bit. I still think his advice probably applies more to standard cameras. Did he mention specifically that he was recommending high levels of detail for non-AA filtered cameras? Because if he is, I would still disagree with him! I certainly am not saying you cannot get decent results by using high levels on the detail…[Read more] - Load More
