thats really a good news, as it seams that the CS-lenses will never come (I don't believe they will come in october)

the question is, what lenses can be recommended in the 60- 100 mm range. As far as i heard those lenses are not made by Zeiss anymore, so I'm a bit doubtful

    any suggestions?

Sorry to say that, but I get a bit annoyed by those D800-S2 comparisons. Just because they have almost the same pixelnumbers, Nikon and Leica are so different concepts and systems so they just cannot be compared.

When you invest in a professional camera system you should consider the whole package (as flashes, light systems, lenses and other equipement and not to forget the customer service and the realiability of the camera) on the one side and the camera itself on the other side. Take this and reflect it against your personal shooting practice and needs (and abilities, for example to focus), and you will know what you need.

You may also rent a D3X and a S2 to compare, and at the end of the day you know what you want (maybe). The D800 is not that much better than the D3X IMHO

with no doubt the 120 first. It's a very nice portrait lens, that can be used indoors as well as outdoors. The 180 will be a nice addtion though, for outdoors when you have enough light

The only irritating aspect is that the sensor attracts a lot of dust (as bad as the M9) and cleaning does not help much as I get spots immediately afterwards, when shooting at f11-22. An ultrasonic cleaning system would really be helpful here…

same for me here, don't know why this sensor is so difficult to clean

Indeed the Elmarit 90 is a very pleasing lens, I love it too. I especially apreciate the built-in lenshood.

If you can live with a half stop less light, then considering the Macro-Elmar is an option. More compact (collapsible), it delivers excelent result.

The beauty of the Leica lens-line-up is that you can use most older lenses without hesitation. I recently discoverd a Summilux 50 I which renders very nicely (not as nice as the actual asph though).

This issue with the loose front ring on the 180 mm lens, can it be resolved by myself? Or has the lens to be sent in? I also wonder why this important part of the lens (with the serial number) is not fixed differently.

I may add that my batterie charger was broken, still didn't get any replacement.

And I also have some dirt in the prism from new, but not enough to give the camera back for service.

I find that when using “TTL-HSS” mode with the SF-58 in aperture priority or manual exposure there is a capture delay that more often than not results in my having missed the image given that I often shoot uncooperative moving targets. I assume that I am doing something wrong, but I do not know what. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

would be nice to know what lag you mean. Of course you have to wait till the preflash is fired until the “real” exposure is calculated and the flash fires together with the camera. As the HSS-Mode is very demanding for the flash due to high power consumption, this can also be overheating and/or weak powersupply.

btw, I miss a pre-flash with saving of the exposure values, or did I miss something in the manual?

But Leica, please do not continue the trend of making all of your expensive goodies available.

don't worry, they don't. Still waiting for my CS-Lens 😎

    Greetings from switzerland as well

what i really need is a more intuitive way to select the ISO-setting

and another suggestion (even if probably complicated to implement):

I need a limitiation of the focus-range for the 120 macro. As the lens don't have such a limitiation, it screws all the way through the focal range, which takes much time. So a limitation from 2-5 m for example would be nice (for portraiture, for example)

Well, this is common. The longer you charge your batteries the nearer you get to 100%, but rarely reach it. I have 3 batteries for the M9 and they are all the same. Btw from what I heard so far a complete recycling of the batteries is not needed or helpful, and will in contrary reduce batterie life.

    Knowledge is the solution.

    well, yes

but let it put into another perspective: One of the S2 selling arguments is the ease of use and weather sealing.

Unluckily, I work in the norther hemisphère, where light is going off qulickly in the evening. Also, I love to shoot in dark places, just yesterday in a cosy Café, where you cannot bring big flashes and other stuff. Also, I'm not that kind of fan of ultra thin sharpnes aeras, which I consider to be a special effect that wears out quickly. This said, an eventual High iso S3 would be highly apreciated.

Regarding the strobes, of course buying a lot of SF58 will be a waste of money, but in my opinion strobes can be very effective if used correctly. With the use of radios, combined with a seconik 758 DR, some older powerfull flashes in manual mode, eventually combined with some portable lightformers, can do wonders and are light and easy to transport. And this is a relatively inexpensive solution. Which can be combined with some other, more powerfull studio flashes.

Lighting vastly expands the applications of a camera like the S2 well beyond available light work …

    so true!

I'm courious to hear what you suggest as solution for an available-light-look-alike lighting for the S2

Speaking of off-camera … that is the single most productive thing you can do creatively … I frequently use a radio controlled set-up with the SF58 set on A, and shoot one-handed which requires the use of a hand-strap. (see attached).

I use this setup also with my pocket wizzards and flashes in M-mode. Will try this once with A-mode as well. The charme of the radio controls is that you don't need a specific flash, so I use my Nikon SB900.
