Its using the current firmware .
I expect its star trails as well . Nothing shows up when shooting in a dark room. however I doubt the star moved that far in a 32 s exposure . Is this similar to pixel overloading when shooting a bright point source. Something like this was reported on the M9 .
I ve never heard of landscape photographers complaining about this or I am just not familiar enough with LS .
Doesn t bother me at all but I don t want to have an issue with a LS shooter when the camera is resold .

attached an easy to see example . ISO160 32S exposure . Similar diagonal stripes in other images less dramatic and they don t seem to show up in shorter exposures.
I think Diglloyd found a similar issue on a M9 ..have to do more work to tell.

The BH55 and my series 2 have been located in an abandoned sports car in Florida …my garage ! I used this combination with the D3X and had good results at the beach . Was testing it with the S2 this spring and it seemed fine. Plus its very portable .
I do believe that Mark Dubovoy is probably right in recommending more stable alternative as our equipment increases in MP and a heavier tripod seems appropriate . Doubt that I will use my series 5 which is a beast and dedicated to the gimbel head and my 600/4 nikkor.
Being basically a M street shooter no one that knows me thinks I am patient enough to use the CUBE . 😀

Helpful insights ..looks like the BH55 has been located so I am temporarily in good shape .

Seems like the consensus is around a Gitzo series 3 ..just as a standard size for the S2 .
I was somewhat surprised by the LL article on “the best tripod” where the author commented on the need for a 5 series equivalent for MF .

Thanks David . The series 3 size with a good ball head (RRS,ARCA etc) seems like the right size but I was reacting to the article on LL where the author swears we will be giving away some necessary stability.

Not confused but maybe misinformed. I did a LR class with Kevin Ames …the photoshop guru that writes about beauty retouching. He was all over the use of the clarity slider and was recommending very high settings (for landscapes) . I know on the Leica files that clarity around 20 works for me but on the Nikon files I go up to 50 . Marc is correct that most recommend using the local adjustment brush when working with skin tones and that clarity can often go slightly negative.
Not really all that important as my primary objective is to create files that are similar when using both the S2 and the M9. The two cameras work well together as they should .

Thanks Josh
I know as you build an archive overtime that there is an advantage to having some consistency in rendering. For example when the pros look back at their life s work ..its nice that everything they shot on kodachrome or tri x has a similar look. For example look at the Leica video on Steve McCurry ….the images that were taken years apart hang together .
So my goal is to have the S2 and M9 files render in a similar way .
My question on clarity really comes from more recent insights on LR3 and how Adobe has worked in improvements in the raw conversions. This may be more related to Nikon files which suffer from the AA filter and benefit greatly from deconvolution algorithms . But the logic was similar above 50% the algorithms start to kick in. I will ask on the adobe forums. (most leica users developed their presets during prior versions of LR ) .

Thanks for the ideas.
I am waiting to see if NYC is still functioning before I leave for the Open.

Its good that Leica has been liberal in honoring warranties especially on used items purchased thru dealers.
My motive is really to expose the scalpers that get on 12 lists and then resell the scarce items for a profit. ( not on this forum). This process undermines those that want to use the lenses. Lets say a dealer has a list of 6 for the new uber expensive unobtainium lens. He gets his allocation from the first batch…..2 lenses. Mr Sharpee gets one and his brother the other. They list and sell them on GETdpi for a bundle…sold to a HK dealer. The other 4 on the list are forced to wait or pay big premiums. Next batch will be in 90-120 days.
The dealer loses because 2 lens left his territory ..the other 4 buyers throw up there hands and buy a Nikon. Sharpee is back on the list .
Long winded explanation ..but if the warranty is not transferrable …its a hurdle. On Leica glass not a big one. But on the m9p its a hinderance.
David do you have Roland s email. I want to send him a few ideas.

I think everything on the DMR was due to faulty electrical . The contacts once completely cleaned helped a lot but the batteries were starting to age and depending on the usage (a lot of captures in a short period of time ) would sometimes overwhelm the battery power.
I could see the files ..I would get images then null files then the folder wouldn t close properly leaving the header record corrupt. So I could recover most of the files and I never lost but a few .

I use a mix of Sandisk and Lexar cards . In Sandisk I use the Ultra, extreme and new extreme pro in 8gb and 16gb formats .
I ve only had 2 card issues in about 75K captures across 8 different digital M s . In one case they were caused by weak batteries (it was really cold out and started with a partially charged battery ..shot half a dozen captures on continuous .) Bad write to the card ..ran out of juice before it completed .
The other was when I was sharing a card between my DMR (should have been called “the Corrupter” ) and the M8 .
I am sure based on the current reports that the write logic is a problem . The cards are clearly capable of handling high volume writing with other cameras including the S2.
But I also think that having a standard operating procedure thats consistent and minimizes anything required of the M9 to write a good file helps. I never start with anything other than a fully charged battery and a fresh formatted card. I always check both as I start out the door and reformat the card just to be sure . I never delete anything while shooting in the camera ..in fact I never delete in the camera on the M9 . I don t shoot on continuous.
Since I use two cameras I wear out before the batteries .. how many images per hour can you shoot while actually looking at the subject? When I get beyond 100 /hour I get less rather than more selects . When I shoot for more than 2 hours without a break …I get less . So when I have my Solo Americano I change the cards and batteries . When I take a coffee break I review all the images so that I pick up any issues sooner rather than later. I check my histogram after every set of 6-12 images .
Exactly how did that guy get a set of “null files “ on his M9 (over on LUF) if he was looking at his histogram.
I ve only had to throw away one card ..ever ! Used to have corrupt cards every other week with the DMR until I started to clean the battery connections and the batteries frequently and never ever shoot more than 100 on a card/battery . But I never lost any images because the images were recoverable with I think Image Rescue software . Then a reformat in the laptop and the card was good to go.
I am sure they have some bad logic in the M9 software ..this is a little like the epson -apple issues . When Sandisk changes ..Leica has to change ..not the otherway around.
Want to be completely sure buy the sandisk ultra 16gb at Costco …works fine in the M9 ,cheap . Only downside is slow transfer to your MacBook.
