Marc and others- how often do you use artificial light and are you more talking more about indoor/studio or also outdoor? For what kind of photography?

Hi Georg,
I agree that I would probably also bring the M9 with 2 fast lenses and use it for low light shots (except maybe the formal ones). I am much a fan of natural light.
If I was shooting in an environment where the light doesnt change much I would also set the eposure manual and put the flash on Ittl to get the right mix between flash light and natural light.
I have only shot on some wedding and I admit the one time when I was asked by a friend to be the “main” photographer I took a Nikon for its foolproff exp metering and flash. If one is the main photographer IMO the most important goal is to catch the moments without any risks.
If one is “addtional” photographer I feel more compfortable and there is more room to experiment.
In your case I would decide for some flash setting and really check it out a couple of times at home to make sure it really works reliably.

Hi Marc,
now you made me think if I need to sell my S2 and buy a Nikon D3100 instead? - November 25, 2011 at 8:44 pm #1583
I think the S2-system is pretty future proof because you buy lenses which are top level.
For me the S2 body user interface is near perfect so for me its worth the money. For sure there will be an S3 one day and the S2 value will drop that day.
However Leica is one of the brands who have prodcuts with long lifecycles and do not bring every year a new model (like m4/3 for example)
I really do not expect that DSLR IQ will come close in IQ of the S2/MF any time soon, and I do think that a Leica S70mm will allways deliver better IQ than a Nikon 50/1.4, even if Nikon developped a 16bit color sensor without AA filter.
I do not expect the revolutionary innovations you are describing, I dont expect wonders.
Yes, sensors get better year for year but very often lenses are the bottle neck.
And sensor improvements are often focused on high ISO/ noise and resolution and not so much regarding color and tonality (which is much more important for my taste)Its still a crazy amount of money for a camera for an amateur (like me), but on the other side you get rewarded. If I browse through my images I can see which are from the S2, even on screen size.
I really would recommend to test the camera and make sure you feel fine with the minimalistic user interface and the size though.

I just found that thread.
I kept my Nikon D700 and M9 when I got the S2. The D700 for fast AF and tele. However I really have used the D700 nearly zero for the last months.
The M9 I have usd occasionally (for example on vacation when I didnt want to carry the S2).
And then I use a smaller camera for bycicle tours, or for evenings/ parties etc. (m4/3, x1 or now Nex).
So yes I also thought to sell the Nikon. Bt selling and rebuying is so expensive that I rather wait a little longer to be 100% sure.
The M9 I want to keep – the M is the only system I have constantly used for over 20 years now.Overall I am really happy that the S2, for which I spent soo much money does work so good for me.
Sometimes I think I am crazy to carry such big camera around for casual shooting.
I am planning to use the M9 a little more again as well. The great thing (besides others) for me is that the files out of the S2 and M9 are just so good without any or maybe slight post processing. I am also very uch surprized how precise the S2 AF works. I barely have any OOF images (as long as subject isnt too fast moving)
