I had been using the LR4 beta since it came out and came to the same conclusion as you. Now that LR4 has been officially released, I have to pony up for the upgrade.

Very impressive photos. The images have a very good texture to them. I agree with you about wanting an extra stop of clean ISO. Your photo of the Harley gas cap at ISO 640 demonstrates just how good it can be when properly exposed. Too bad ISO 1250 isn't as good. Even with the relatively fast Leica S glass, sometimes you really need more low light capability than the S2 is currently capable of delivering. Even so, I have a very hard time making myself use my Canon.
I would like to think Leica is working on a firmware improvement that would eek out better ISO 1250 performance. That is probably just a dream on my part since I haven't heard anything about new firmware. However, I have read that Leica is working on a 30 – 90mm zoom for the S2 and I am really looking forward to it.

Hey Stuart,
I am sure David or Josh will jump in and let you know what they have tried or are thinking of trying. They brought some sort of technical camera adapted to attach to an S2 with them on the New England fall foilage trip last fall. I used it with my S2 for a photo of a church to gain perspective control. It worked with no problem, but I can't recall the brand. Sorry.
Good luck on your quest.

Marc, thank you for posting the link to Irakly's review. It's a solid review. I learned some technical attributes/descriptions about the S2 image quality that I have loved during my two years with S2 but didn't know how to describe in technical terms. It's too bad the Aptus back was acting up (I hope that was the case).
I have always enjoyed Irakly's work. His photos are ones that invite the viewer to step in and take a look around – there is usually something interesting to discover besides the main subject.

You never cease to amaze me with your triptych vision. I like it.

Beautiful image Pete. I would say the trek was worth it.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I can attest the 30mm lens, and S2 for that matter, can tolerate a significant about rain with no ill effects. It was pouring a cold rain which soon changed over to heavy snow soon after completing my try out the lens.
Nick I hope you don't me joining in on the 30mm fun.
Here is one from NYC The Mall – Central Park last fall in the rain (cropped bottom portion of frame)

Hi Nick,
Congratulations on getting the 30mm. It is a great lens and I am tempted to get one myself. I had the privilege of trying a prototype 30mm in NYC at PhotoPlus last fall and fell in love with it. That little extra fov from 35mm to 30mm can make huge difference and probably fits my needs better.
I agree with your observation about the lens correction. Frankly, I didn't notice any distortion in the real-life photos I took with the lens, but it was apparent when applying the lens correction in LR. It is kinda like the image uncurls a little bit. Still, I think Leica has accomplished quite a feat in delivering a fast lens with this wide angle fov and sharpness in the corners.
I look forward to seeing more photos from you with this lens.

Thanks for posting these photos Jack. I caught myself with a big grin when viewing these photos. That was a good time.
I was wondering how you could make triptych from the waterfall and you didn't disappoint. I also like the tall skinny one also.

Hey David,
Roger has expressed interest in doing a photo trip to the Everglades so am glad to hear you are interested as well. I didn't have much time on this last trip as I would have liked and the clouds were not very good so my keeper rate was low this time around. I can't wait to geet back down there. I was talking with the ladies at Clyde Butcher's gallery and they said September would be a good time of year to come back as Big Cypress is more colorful that time of year. I have no idea what the Everglades and Big Cypress look like except during Winter so I definitely want to make a trip in the late sprin or early fall. Maybe you and Roger can do some scouting trips and be guides for my next trip down that way.:D

Hi Bob,
No I didn't wade into the water for the shot. I was literally just a few feet off the paved parking lot of Clyde Butcher's gallery.
I hadn't considered a desaturated color version but that could be interesting so I will give it a try. I have also thought about doing a warmer B&W conversion or maybe a light sepia tone.

Thank you for the nice comments guys. I have printed this at 13″ x 19″ (biggest I have at the moment) and I am extremely happy with it. I anxious to get it printed larger. However, I think there is some room for improvement in my processing technique before I go larger.
