I had the pleasure of shooting a few frames with the zoom and 24mm at PhotoPlus. Unfortunately, I can't share my photos since the lens were prototypes. I have been wanting the 30-90mm zoom ever since the S system was announced. Needless to say, I had high expectations for that lens and it didn't disappoint. The images have the same S lens characteristic and the out of focus areas looked very pleasing to me (that was one of my main concerns). There are 3 things that one show keep in mind with this lens: 1) it is heavier than the 35mm or 70mm; 2) the lens barrel extends with zoom; and 3) the lens hood appears to be better suited for the wide end of the zoom (not sure it will do much for use at 90mm). I will get one as soon as funding and availability permit.
The 24mm was a surprise for me. I didn't have any desire for a lens that wide. I changed my mind after seeing a few images from the lens. It will have to wait until after I get the 30-90mm, but it is now in the wish list whereas before it wasn't even a consideration.
Hopefully we won't have to wait much longer for David to get the lenses in and show us the goods.

Marc, thank you so much for the detailed explanations. Very helpful.

For what it's worth, Leica has new version of its shuttle software for shooting tethered which should be released soon. I saw it in action at the Leica studio event at PhotoPlus about a month ago. I don't know when it will be available for S2 owners to download and I don't know if it offers any performance improvement over the current version. Perhaps David Farkas has more info on the new shuttle software.

I agree Stuart. Leica has always handled my few equipment issues very fairly. I can honestly say, I will continue to be a Leica customer largely because the manner in which they have resolved issues and treated me over the years. A company can make the best products in the world, but that is worthless to me if they don't stand behind it. Fortunately, Leica delivers in both respects.

I will add that as the ISO is increased the max shutter speed decreases.

Great images – 1 and 6 are my favorites.

Thank you all for the kind words. I must admit I really enjoyed my brief time photographing the models and would like to do more of it. I think most of the talent showing in theses photos is from the model. I didn't have to do anything but compose and fire shutter.
Jack, the first photo is my favorite as well and I do want to print it large – if nothing else just to see how ISO 640 holds up. The first photo was pretty close to properly exposed. The other two required an increase in exposure of 1 to 2 stops in LR so they are more noisy. However, the loss of detail from shooting at ISO 640 isn't necessarily a bad thing when shooting people. All three images were processed in Lr and then Silver Efex 2.
David K. I would like to take you up on your offer. I don't know when Roger is coming back down to Florida, but I am tentatively planning on coming down sometime in early December. I will be in touch.

I don't know how old the news is, but I definitely see it as good news. I am glad to see Leica on the forefront of this technology. I handled the new M at PhotoPlus last week and to no surprise it felt exactly like an M which is a great thing.
I can't wait to see the image quality from this new sensor. Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long to wait.

That was a close call. Thanks for sharing this info so the rest of us can learn from it.

Al,
I believe David Farkas has checked into this and confirmed that the upgrades are available on purchases after the Sept 20, 2010 date and up until the CS lenses become available or something like that. Hopefully, David can clarify. I too have a lens purchase after that date which I hope is upgradable.

I really like the first one. I can't resist photographing brightly colored vines on tree trunks. Not sure why.

Really nice photos Marc. I gotta say, there is no way to detect the difficulties you had by looking at the photo. The exposure looks great to my eye.

THe hood does appear to be rather short and wide so I don't see how it can be very effective at 90mm especially since it appears to be attached to the end of the extending portion of the lens barrel.
If it were attached at the non-moving portion of the lens and the lens extends for the wider angle focal lengths and is fully retracted for 90mm then the hood could be more effective.
This is something I will be looking at when I see the lens at PhotoPlus in a few weeks. If the hood design is not effective at all focal lengths then it won't be a deal breaker for me. It is something that will need to be considered in use.

Good point David. Reading your report of the S improvements reminded me of some conversations and requests I have made to the Leica staff.
Question, is focus bracketing an option in the new S? If not, then forewarn Stephan that I will be asking him about it again at PhotoPlus. 🙂
