Hi Mark. That scratch would certainly make your eyes water.
I suggest that you take a look for another lens of the same model in the usual places rather than contemplate repairs which could potentially approach the value of a used lens. In my experience with that particular lens they can be under-appreciated/valued on the used market despite performing extremely well. Worth a look at the very least.
I actually bought a second one quite cheaply specifically because it was coded and my current example was not. I planned to have the mount swapped along with a CLA on both, one to keep and one to then resell. In the end my repairer (in Australia) actually had replacement mounts on hand.
Good luck - December 1, 2012 at 8:58 pm #3233
Thank you very much for that Josh. Yes I was aware of the detail of the Hasselblad system. Their division head described a further update to True Focus II in their new H5D range.
I only had an opportunity to shoot a (casual) 40 frames or so with the S2 over a lunch with a national Leica rep and saw no errors when I shot everything wide open. So as a practical matter your experience tells me that the system works fine and there are significant improvements in that area of the newer model as well. I would be working no differently then with my M9 regarding focus/recompose.Your suggestion on the alternate focus screen is very helpful too.

Hi, my nearest S dealer is many hundreds of miles away and there is no local exposure /knowledge on S at all (only 4 million people in my state and I think just 2 or 3 actual dealers in a country of 22 million people). It's hard enough with the M system which I am now using.
Can anyone provide or point me to detail on the changes to the AF functions? I recently attended a promotional evening by the local Hasselblad folks (since a photographer I know was demonstrating studio techniques). The head of their Danish digital division spoke on their new models and referenced their system for correction of focus distance due to using centre AF focus, lock and recomposing. - December 27, 2011 at 10:16 pm #1781
Hi Arif. I have the M9 not the S2. However similar artefacts have been rarely reported with the M8 and M9. In those instances it appears to be a problem with the sensor and its supporting electronics. It may only be evident in particular conditions (as you noted).
The fix in those cases has been usually warranty priority repair by replacing the complete assembly. The electronics and processing in the S2 are quite different to that in the M's of course.I recommend that you talk with your dealer promptly and include 100% crops as you have shown here.

That rumour doesn't make sense for me either. I would not be surprised if the grey M9 option just fades away but that is because the chrome M9-P option has proven to be so popular. I don't see why the black paint M9 can't continue to co-exist with the M9-P options though since the internals of course are identical.
Of course everything may change when the next M arrives.
