Very nice collection of shots, cleverly avoiding typical vacation snapping! 🙂 I think my fav is the first one, which I'm guessing is in moonlight. Lovely colors, reflection. And I like that black sand beach pic too… what is that location; road to Hana?

A lovely landscape, Arif, with a dramatic sky. Still, the clouds allowed some sunshine where needed.

Plenty of detail to admire… and for some reason it looks familiar.

Congratulations on the “new” kit! Coincidentally, my chrome M8 has the shutter and viewfinder upgrades too. I hope you'll enjoy yours as much as I like mine!

Interesting issue in itself, but also it implies there have been 30000 M9 cameras sold… if 15 units is .05% of units sold. Or am I reading this wrong…

Anyone else tried the Pentax 105?

I have not tried it, but probably will. I have two of them, the old Takumar like the one in your test came with a used non-MLU P6x7 in 1976. The newer Pentax 67 lens I got in 2006 for $275, and I think they're optically the same though the barrel is different and perhaps the SMC coatings are improved.

    Thanks for the interesting test!

So far I've used the 100mm f/4 macro, the 45mm, 165mm LS, and late 200mm. I'm seeing CA's in the latter three like you report, and good performance except with the disappointing 165. Not surprisingly the 100mm is the best of this bunch, as one of the last new lenses in the line.

How about LensAlign? Nicely made product just for this purpose…

Sounds like there are some inconsistencies and confusion in this warranty issue. I had two warranty type contacts that may just add to the confusion.

First, I got a “demo” M8 from a small dealer (who did not fill in the warranty card). When the vertical line issue came up in online discussions, pixel-peeping revealed it in this camera. The dealer sent the camera to New Jersey, and the problem was fixed at no charge, while I opted for two “upgrades” at the same time. Even before this I was able to register the camera in the Owners Area online.

Second, from its original owner I got a used M9 that had some dead/hot pixels, sent it to NJ myself enclosing a copy of the original dealer-filled warranty card. Fixed at no charge. Since the Owners Area is apparently administered by Solms, I contacted them separately, pointing out the camera + warranty card was then in NJ, and they made it possible for me to add it to my stuff in the Owners Area, where it had previously been rejected. I guess the registration got transferred to me? All's well, etc. 🙂

Yes, the full pic somehow reminds me of “Toy Story”… 🙂

Thanks, Al! The Public Market used to be a favorite photo destination for me in the late 60's when I lived on Capitol Hill and shopped cameras at Olympic Camera on 4th. And even after I moved to more distant parts of Seattle. It has changed a lot over the years. For that matter the whole waterfront area was a gold mine of photo opportunities. Trekking around there I'd often carry both an M2 with 35/2 plus a Spotmatic with 85mm.

I particularly like that first one, such rich greens and rose colors…

Interesting pano, and look at that blue sky! I was going to remark that it's a familiar skyline… but it's NOT really familiar, as it's been many years since I've come into Seattle on the ferry from Bremerton, which would give this view.

The most easily identifiable building is that stubby little thing over at the far right, called the Smith Tower, which used to be a tall building for Seattle, a landmark. That greenish building with the white cap hides the hotel where the Leica roadshow for the M9 and S2 events were held, and the black building to its right (not that really tall black one) I think is the one with the fancy Mirabeau restaurant on the 50th floor, a great view for my wedding dinner in the 70's as it was the tallest at the time! How times have changed that skyline…

Are we talking Leica-branded lenses, or M-mount lenses? I didn't have a 50mm at all for many years, using just the 35 Summicron and 90 TE on my M2. Now I have several 50mm lenses but none are Leica.

The first time I used a 50 on the M2 was somewhat of a revelation. I could see easily outside the framelines… which I never could with the 35, and for the 90 it was immaterial because nearly everything was outside the framelines! I never have used the 90 much.

So, now I have choices… C-Sonnar, Planar, f/2 Heliar collapsible, Skopar, and a pair of nickel Heliars, one f/2 and the other f/3.5. The first three have been coded and focus-checked by DAG; I most often pick the C-Sonnar or black Heliar to use.

Jack, good luck with your Air! With the solid state drive, that should have really impressive input/output performance. And I hope its other attributes will suit you well.

I'm considering a MacBook Pro to replace my little 12″ G4 PowerBook, which is convenient for travel, and that's about all I use it for. Doesn't have the horsepower to run any current RAW processing software. But I would like to be able to better see the “take” while afield…
