Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineVery nice, Pete! I particularly like the second and third shots as abstractions that keep the eyes moving. I've never been there, but have marveled at photos of the formations. I did have my S2 in the area last June, passing through Page toward Kanab. I understand, however, that the canyon is a strenuous and difficult visit.

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineI appreciate the suggestions, gents! I've visited the manufacturer's websites and those of some suppliers too. There are a number of Ex Officio vests, but the search doesn't bring up a light/summer weight model, except at one vendor where it's listed as unavailable (though it looks pretty good).
At Columbia's website, the search feature (like others) brings up things not searched for… like if I enter “men's titanium vest” it shows 1 vest and 18 jackets (none called “titanium”). Their Men’s Silver Ridge™ Vest looks very suitable, though, and the reviews indicate it's a summer weight item. Might be a good choice, and I like the darker colors it is offered in.
Thanks again!

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineMarc, I have similar thoughts. The world changes. Shortly after I got an M8, my local pro film lab closed its doors. Just like that, my world went digital, and I have rarely used any of my many film cameras since. Most should go to someone who will use them. Getting the S2, I sold nothing. I never used my Pentax dSLRs much, but now with the S2 they're really getting lonely too.

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineHi Andy – I assume you have a household policy for your residence? If they have a value/item limit, perhaps a separate rider could be drawn up. Cars often are valued more, of course, and are put to risk at least as much, so there should be a solution.
Good reminder for me to again discuss this with my household agent… As I recall previously there was a need for a listing with description, replacement value, serial number etc. I need to follow through on this, now with the S2!

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineVery thoughtful offer, Jack, thank you! I think I will pass, as there would be a orange vs red clash with my Leica ballcap. 🙂 Actually something more subtle would be preferable. It has some notable features, with the removable document holder, unusual side pouches, epaulets etc. The fabric looks shiny in the pic… I’m sure someone will value the branding and collector aspect more than I.
Thanks, Arif, for the Billingham comments. The “warm” matter might be an issue, as it’s easy to “layer up” as needed when cool, but there’s a limit to possible shedding when hot.
I wonder if the Tamrac is cooler than the Billingham… I should get more than one vest, as I have several to replace.

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineThanks for the useful example pics, Josh! Mine has distinctly green letters like the bottom example, indoors where I can see it. Outdoors if I cup my hand around it, then it's faintly visible.
[Mine, shipped yesterday to NJ by UPS Next Day Air, didn't even make it out of town yet, so I think I'll be getting a refund on the shipping costs.]

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineMy S2 went off to Allendale NJ Thursday afternoon, UPS Next Day Air, due to arrive before 3pm eastern time Friday. I paid for that leg of the journey. Perhaps Leica USA will get it off to Germany later Friday… they pay for that part of the trip, and the return to me later by Overnight shipment.
I spoke with Carmen, very helpful, clearly aware of the issue and asked the serial number over the phone. Wanted to know if it was an S2P… Might be a couple weeks before I see it again, and that will be welcome since I'm off to Hawaii mid-November.

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineMine is essentially invisible in daylight as well… Is this service done in NJ?

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineSome nice color in an alien landscape! Is there a season when the color is most prominent? That's in the northern part of the island?

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineOh, yes, the place of refuge; I've been there a couple times but somehow missed seeing that dramatic shoreline. Or certainly missed seeing it in that way you did! We have stayed at Keauhou, so it was not so far down the road to visit.
We'll be on Maui this time, so will have other things to shoot. Thanks!

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineVery nice indeed! I especially like #4, though #1 & 3 show an intriguing “beach-scape”. I'm curious about the location, as I'll be traveling to the state later this Fall. Thanks for posting!

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineI like that first one, Joe, with the layers of different vegitation, and of course reflections in water are attractive. 🙂 The second one doesn't do anything for me…

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineWelcome, Craig! In moving from 35mm to MF, you might prefer to retain the familiar form factor by choosing the S2. That was part of my decision, and the other was the Leica user interface. I'm not a pro, and seldom use a tripod or long lenses for my street, documentary, travel, people type shooting.
Back when I chose MF, I was a Pentax SLR user (along with a Leica M2), so the big P67 was immediately the attractive choice. I had used TLRs and Hasselblads, and tried out a Mamiya RB67, but the P67 just felt right. That was 35 years ago, and I'm still very fond of the P67, less so the P645 because of the shape and handling. But I have a bunch of 645 and 67 lenses, so with the advent of the P645D that had to be strongly considered.
I had the opportunity to try out the S2 at a Leica roadshow event and immediately liked it. Reminiscent of a somewhat smaller P67, an advantage to me. I waited until the P645D was available, and the complex user interface was “strike two” after the unfavorable form factor. I have a Pentax K20D, but far prefer the simpler user interface of the Leica M8/9. So now I had two strong points in the S2's favor, plus the promise of optical superiority, balanced against the big cost.
I'm glad I just bit my lip and bought it. Fortunately, there's an adapter to allow use of my P67 lenses for some inexpensive flexibility. I expect S2 owners come from varied backgrounds and develop their own priorities that have led them to the same answer. Happy shopping! 😎

Leica M, Leica S, Leica QOfflineI can no longer manage the tight curves of that highway around the north shore between Hana and Paia; I get nauseous and dizzy. The last time going CCW I barely made it to Mama's Fish House to recuperate! The first time, years ago, going clockwise, the pavement ended a mile or so past Kipahulu (aviator Charles Lindbergh is buried on the grounds of the Palapala Ho'omau Church in Kipahulu).
Late in the afternoon, it was dark with thunderstorms and rain, and near the end of the pavement the gravel track descended to beach level and forded a stream (no bridge). About half-way to Ulupalakua Ranch (where the pavement resumed), in the dark I hit a largish rock flattening the right front tire. Our rental car was a Pontiac J-2000, to give you an idea of the era… front wheel drive so I moved the RR tire to the RF and put the little high-pressure spare on the RR. Soaked to the bone, no further incidents…
So, a few years ago, when we ventured down the hill after visiting Tedeschi Winery (at the Ranch), we were shocked to meet tour buses and rental Camaros coming the other way. Obviously the road had been improved, as formerly the car rental agencies barred driving that road as well as around the north end of West Maui (which was a jeep track too).
Lots of great photos awaiting on the “dry” south side of Haleakala, and I'll have another look late this Fall, but will not venture north of Hana!
