• David Farkas and Josh Leher brought along a Schneider 120mm tilt/shift lens on the S2 Fall Foliage trip. It was in Mamiya mount and attached to the S2 via adapter. I tried the lens a couple times. It is very well built, easy to use (once you learn how to use it), and it is a very good performer.

I am sure David or Josh can provide additional info.

Whew! I am glad you were able to update the firmware. Also, I am very impressed with your dealer taking care of you the way he did.

  • I like it. Well done. The sun angle is great for backlighting the flag and stone building. However, it puts the wreaths leaning on the headstones in shadow. To bad you can't have it all.

  • Al, it appears you are having a good time in South Florida. In my opinion, it is a sad commentary on our current culture to lable that very attractive lady as a plus-sized model. She doesn't appear to be skinny, but she certainly doesn't seem to be what I think of as plus-sized. Of course I am basing my comments on your photos and perhaps your…[Read more]

I used the Upstrap with my Leica M8 and really liked it. However, I have not used the larger version for larger cameras so I can't help you much there. Sorry.

  • Mark Gowin replied to the topic Future of the S2 in the forum S2 13 years ago

The S2 and associated lenses are very expensive no doubt about it. I fully expect the S2 to be replaced with an S3 (or whatever they call it) and at that time the S2 will be worth considerably less. However, the S2 will still function the same and be capable of the same exceptional IQ. If or when I decide to replace the S2 it will be voluntary.…[Read more]

Good one Jack. Although three different, but complementary images of Courtney would make a nice triptych of sorts.

David K. That is great news for Courtney and I it should be a source of pride for you.

  • Mark Gowin replied to the topic Latest Shoot in the forum Images to Share 13 years ago

Courtney is a beautiful model and you did great job photographing her. I hope you share more of this session.

  • As far as I know, the CS lens won't help you (or not much) in terms of less vibration when shooting handheld. The reason is that the mirror still has to travel up during the shot sequence whether a focal plane shutter or central shutter is used. I think the mirror would be the biggest source of vibration. Perhaps I am wrong and someone else will chime in.

  • Thank you for the kind comments everyone. I was drawn to make the image because the multiple mini falls all on one level made for a rather wide larger overall falls. I didn't really think about printing the image when I made it. The ratio of this image is not very practical for display except for in a very unique space.

    Jack, I like your…[Read more]

  • That is good to know. Thank you.

I actually ventured outside my comfort zone of landscapes and wildlife earlier this week and did some bridal shots for a friend. Surprisingly, I ended up using all three of my lenses – 35mm, 70mm (most used), and 180mm (least used).

  • I agree. I would love to have the 120mm.

  • Well done David. Samantha is a terrific model. The 120mm is perfectly suited for this type of photography and therefore, the CS version would be ideal. It's a good thing I don't do this type of photography because I would have to buy a 120mm CS.

  • I set the clipping warning limits in firmware to something more conservative like 5 and 250 just to give me a clue when I am close to the limits. Sometimes, this is too conservative and I blow the limits intentionally. The highlight limits are the most difficult to control in my opinion.

I don't know if a histogram based on the raw image…[Read more]

  • I appreciate your point of view Marc. It's good to know I am not the only that has issues with the standard print/frame sizes.

Back in my Canon 5D days I got a Brightscreen split image focusing screen with 8×10 crop lines to help me compose properly for the print. It was very frustrating every time I looked through the viewfinder and saw how…[Read more]

…but, yes, I see your point. Although, for wedding album two-page spreads, I'd assume that wider aspect ratio is actually better (12×24).

You make a good point about the album. In fact, I pre-purchased an album sample package at PhotoPlus. I figure large albums…[Read more]

  • Thank you for the crop comparisons Marc. You bring up a good point about cropping to the standard print sizes. However, I have never learned or understood why the standard print sizes are what they are. Those print sizes even require some cropping of 4:3 ratio originals. It drives me nuts as I much prefer the wider 3:2 aspect ratio. It just seems…[Read more]

Congratulations on getting your new S2 Sébastien. You have good reason to be happy. The S2 is a wonderful camera as I am sure you are already discovering.

  • I also expected a 30mm T/S sooner rather than later. I don't recall where that lens now falls in Leica's S lens road map. Hopefully, David Farkas can shed some light on this. I know he talked with the S product managers at length while at Photo Plus.

The 30mm beter suits my needs for landscape photography and based on a preliminary shoot…[Read more]
