I didn't necessarily intend to shoot this flower at f3.2, but the wind was blowing a lot and I needed a very high shutter speed, so there it is….

Two new photos from the Leica X-U (X-Underwater) camera: The front door to a house in the historic district of Charleston SC, and a nighttime view of the wars memorial at Waterfront Park.

Today's photos (shot as JPEGs) with the Leica X-U: Stairway of parking deck in B&W. Sunset on average white balance (haven't worked out color temp yet, and there are no ‘scenes'). Wetland with grayish sky.

My impression of the X-U is that it does extremely well as a regular camera, ignoring (for now) the underwater feature.

My first image with the Leica X-U (X-underwater) camera. Shot as JPEG only on dry land – a spontaneous take in a local public park deli. I think the X-U does well at ISO 800. I should have some underwater pics in a couple of weeks. BTW, this camera has no jack for a USB connection.

Downtown Charleston SC on King Street — “Second Sunday”, where the street is closed off to traffic, vendors set up on the street, and existing shops set up tables on the street outside of their shops.

I've had dust and stuff with the Leica Monochrom, so someone suggested shooting a cloudless sky, and look close for any spots. But that's mostly for sensor dust. For lens dust I think you should test for 2 things at least – loss of contrast, since the dust will not be visible, but the blur could lower the contrast. The second thing would be any sort of diffraction or scatter, which you might be able to detect when shooting lights.

Here's a type of image that I rarely post, since the quality isn't the best. But I took it on the street at night through a plate glass window, and in spite of using ISO 200, there's more noise than I expected, due to the lack of good lighting. I thought it had a kind of “Home Sweet Home” look, and that made it a keeper.

Leica Q, f5.6, 1/4 sec. braced against window, ISO 200.

This is a place I visit on the Charleston County shoreline. The pond usually has a resident alligator, courtesy of Bulls Island nearby. There's a light fog in the background.

This is JPEG only, shot through a plate-glass window, with some unavoidable reflections even though the lens barrel was squarely in contact with the window glass. So, a little cloning to remove the reflections….

This image required significant perspective correction, and then cropping, so may look a bit ragged. Shot as JPEG only.

I still have the original 1.0 firmware. The lens makes a noise, which I wouldn't say is humming because there's no particular tone, just the noise. With OIS off, the noise is fairly steady, but with OIS on, you can hear the noise constantly changing as the lens is moving to compensate for shaking. I also tried setting the focus to continuous instead of single, but that didn't make any difference in the lens noise. I also tried setting to manual focus with OIS off, and still the lens made that subtle noise.

The USS Yorktown is anchored there, with more WW2 ships and a submarine behind it. They're great for a tour.

The alligator in the pond loves pets, all sizes included, so a tough German Shepherd or Pitbull is just another lunch.
