Thanks – the actual sky was a wintery look that was gray and gloomy, and what made the image for me was the pattern it had – perfect for b&w. Still, I think my capture got some color shift or fringe effect, so not as clean as I'd like ideally.

Just an aside – I think this image is going to “go viral” as it's said. I already linked to it on Stereophile's review of a very fine $17k loudspeaker pair – it makes the point that there are great choices of gear in the marketplace for people who are willing to invest in them.

That gave me a good chuckle. Imagine what some of these guys have to do when they're pixel-peeping those gigapixel images that Google and others put together. I don't have the S, but having the MM and X Vario and seeing the detail as well as the integrity from edge to edge, I wouldn't second-guess the S or any of the lenses. I can't imagine anyone accepting a so-so lens at the prices they demand anyway, and if someone did think their lens wasn't reasonably sharp wide open at all points, the Leica dealer would fall all over themself inspecting it to make sure.

Edit: I pixel-peeped the big picture – plenty of detail in the stadium, but looking at the foliage *outside* of the stadium at the upper right, detail in the foliage at that distance is still visible. Pretty amazing.

I bought the X1 in early 2010 and donated it to my photo club after getting the X Vario. If the X Vario IQ weren't as good as it is, it's just great to handle and use, and that manual zoom is the slickest thing in the world. You just have to operate one to appreciate it.

Very nice images. I hadn't realized the Packers had won that many titles. I'm a big fan of Vince Lombardi, and had the deluxe glass-and-wood-framed speech on winning on my desk for years. But, I have a fondness for the Steelers, being an Easterner as it were.

Looking at those clouds, I'd hope somebody remembered an umbrella, especially when carrying the ‘S' camera. The players on the field seem tiny from up in the seats, which has me wondering – do the fans typically watch a screen, or are they able to follow the plays closely from up in the stands? If I were far enough from the field, I'd want binoculars at least.

New Nocti arrived, snapped a few MM images – awesome detail, back in business.

It's a good time for an update. My MM is waiting for a lens, so I've been using the XV for a week. First impression from latest use: It's a Leica, it's reasonably light, very handy, has a great zoom lens, image quality bests everything I've used that's digital, and it can be slow at times, particularly when the lens is extended. If I hadn't gotten the MM recently, I would be carrying the XV and D-Lux6 everywhere.

Apologies if this was answered, but how do you carry the large print around, and protect it?

Thanks David. There are so many factors …. but the scaling thing may very well account for why some of my images look great and others that should look as good don't have the same impact on the same screen. In any case I have a lot of automation tools for the PC that don't run native on the Mac, so a good PC laptop will come in handy on road trips.

But, it would be nice to have embedded data bits in each image file that a computer could read and perform automatically perfect displays based on how each file is configured. For playback I've been using Irfanview on PCs and with the Mac just open a series of highlighted lists – one list to each window. I love that crude but effective simplicity.

I've had a lot of laptops since 1984, but all of them had lousy screens. Now I have a Macbook, but I see that some of the PC vendors like Dell are making stylish laptops that are slim with good screens, and I wonder if any of those have screens that are good enough to use for casual editing and viewing without the need for color calibration.

Great thoughts. More resolution shouldn't hurt. A lens and camera that support a sometimes spontaneous shooting style is my favorite. I've belonged to several clubs that identified as photo clubs (as compared to camera clubs), the last one a really big regional club, but everyone always went out to the shoots with camera and big tripod. So far I've never seen a Leica in these clubs. I saw a Leica M8 once about 5 years ago – a visitor to the Akron Ohio Art Institute was carrying one and let me hold it. It felt like an iron brick. Having the MM now, I'm reliving that moment each day.

Thanks. I know that even if it weren't really defective, you would have to examine it anyway, so back it went. It's too bad that there's no realistic way to determine a future resale value for this lens, because if there was, I'd just keep it. The lens performance is A-OK from what I can tell.

This 18746 bag is now carrying the M Monochrom and Noctilux lens comfortably, although I have to fold the strap carefully to squeeze it in. Then the pouch in front holds microfiber cloth, extra SD cards, SD and microSD adapters, ballpoint pen, small papers etc.
