dalethorn started the topic First images with new D-Lux typ 109 in the forum Leica D-Lux 10 years ago
My first photos (taken as JPEG only) with the new Leica D-Lux (typ 109) – these were taken in a gloomy rainy environment, approximately 20 minutes before sunset, albeit the clouds were so thick that it wasn't possible to see where the Sun actually was. The tree resolved well given the flat lighting, but the landscape foliage didn't fare so well.…[Read more]

dalethorn started the topic Leica T practice images (various) in the forum Images to Share 10 years, 1 month ago
Four recent images I processed to illustrate how I use the Leica T/18-56 and what kind of results I get shooting JPEGs: The Halloween house was easy to shoot, but difficult to get the perspective right after the fact (using an old copy of Paint Shop Pro). The leaves-in-flowerpot is a favorite of mine for color and texture. The fish had to be…[Read more]

dalethorn replied to the topic When memory cards die in the forum Memory and Storage 10 years, 1 month ago
I've been using many flash memory cards since 1994. In the mid-2000's I had a couple of corrupted cards and a few people I knew also had corrupted cards – compact flash and SD cards. All of those I recovered with Windows 98, since the Windows NT/2000/XP and newer O/S versions (as well as Mac) could not read those cards.
Since then I've lost a…[Read more]

With this historic/tourist transport image, I was hoping to get a little more room in front of the horse, but fate didn't allow enough time. This is one of the smaller buggies, which carry 4 or 5 people. My only ride was on a wagon pulled by 2 mules, which seated 16 people.

dalethorn started the topic Ravenel Bridge at Night – Long View in the forum Images to Share 10 years, 1 month ago
This scene I've shot before, but my first attempt here with the T/18-56. Not sure why so much noise, but I assume shooting JPEG at 8 seconds, even at ISO 100 – that's what I get. There doesn't seem to be a “Long Exposure Noise Reduction” feature like the Monochrom has, so I wonder if a firmware update could add that feature.
Leica T/18-56,…[Read more]

dalethorn started the topic Ravenel Bridge – Lights and Low Clouds in the forum Images to Share 10 years, 2 months ago
I've done this scene a few times, this the first with the T/18-56. This was my second attempt to capture the wispy low clouds moving through the lights projected upward from the bridge supports – in the first attempt using the built-in 16 gb memory, the camera spontaneously deleted all of my JPEGs, but left 2 short video clips intact. I went and…[Read more]

dalethorn started the topic Possibility of losing image files from memory. in the forum Leica T 10 years, 2 months ago
I lost several images tonight. I don't recall the exact sequence of what I did, but none of those were image-delete functions. I've read about this but hadn't experienced it in 2 months of shooting, so I'd highly recommend – if you've been using the 16 gb internal memory in lieu of a physical SD card, to put an SD card into the camera so your…[Read more]

These were taken at the ‘Scenic Overlook' in Southern WVa on the Southbound side of I-77. The date was 27 August – not yet time for Autumn colors. Since I'm using the same computer and photo editor as I have for the prior 5 years, I can see that the T/18-56 is producing much better JPEGs than my previous cameras (X Vario, X1, Nikon ‘A'),…[Read more]

dalethorn started the topic Louis Vuitton Street Ad/Poster in the forum Images to Share 10 years, 2 months ago
While it's unlikely anyone would mistake this for commercial photography, this image is just my quick snapshot of a LV poster outside of the local store. That said, the reflections on the glass that the poster is enclosed in were so bad that I had to shoot this at an approx. 45 degree angle, then redo the perspective in PP. For me, it's a fun…[Read more]

Leica Ultravid 10×42 BR (not the Ultravid HD). Like new except for exterior stains and two small ‘dings' on the center wheel and brace. I have a close-up inspection video on youtube (dalethorn2). $975 USD including shipping. I have the Leica ‘passport' card for this item. Purchased at Samy's Fairfax in Nov. 2005, but used only a few days.

These images were taken within 5 minutes of each other, and neither composition has been altered. The red clouds around the bridge tower in #1 look somewhat like a blowtorch – one of those random cloud patterns that occur often at this location (Ravenel Bridge, SC).

Akron, Ohio – Cascade Plaza downtown (Main & Market streets). The tall white building (First Nat'l Tower, 1920's) was/is the largest building of its type in Akron, but the Goodyear Airdock built around the same time is actually taller, and covers at least as much ground as this entire plaza. A couple of different views of Charleston Harbor. Why the daytime image settings I don't know – at this point the camera must have been on HDR or something similar. Whatever the case, it worked out and without the usual excess purple fringing in the clouds that I've experienced with other similar cameras. The sunset was a spontaneous grab on…[Read more]

dalethorn replied to the topic firmware issue in the forum Leica T 10 years, 2 months ago
The T firmware update was somewhat scary. I followed the instructions down to ‘Restart the camera', which didn't say how to restart the camera, and that's especially significant given the prior warnings to NOT TURN OFF the camera. So I took the big chance to turn it off after the restart screen appeared, and watched it turn on, and being the…[Read more]

This new color photo (Leica T/18-56) and last year's B&W (Leica Monochrom/Noctilux) aren't nearly the same perspective, but certain similar details in these images tell me that the ‘T' is doing very well with the 18-56 zoom lens. I didn't try any sharpening, since I don't have a simple enough way to control that without brightening the…[Read more]

Nice sunset images, Dale! I especially like the top one, as I think the lit road lights add something very nice.
