Today for the first time I tried to change my avatar. Whoa! To get my head into the frame, I had to start with a given size, say 960 x 1280, then change the canvas size to 1280 x 1920 (the 960 x 1280 image now floating in the center of the larger canvas), then let the forum software crop it to the square format. I've had years to learn these…[Read more]

dalethorn started the topic D-Lux (109) – Stained Glass Peacock in the forum Leica D-Lux 9 years, 11 months ago
Stained glass inside of a frame, hanging in a restaurant. The only alteration here was where the ~70 pixel-high glass “frame” on the bottom had no color, I copied the top frame, flipped it upside down, and pasted it in at the bottom.

Note in this test I'm using Center-weighted metering and One-Area AF, but the camera won't stay focused on the center subject – the logo on the person's shirt.

Thanks – besides the usual difficulties, getting such favorable lighting was due to someone opening a skylight or windows of some kind, and there were the extreme contrasts from that. But I thought the D-Lux handled it very well.

I often have difficulty with these close-ups in getting spiders and other critters in focus over the whole body (or most of it).

I've been shooting this church interior occasionally with various cameras (Nikon ‘A', Panasonic GM1, Leica ‘T' and X Vario, etc.), but the D-Lux has done the best job so far, I suppose because it has the best combination of sensor size and fast lens. It isn't possible to use a tripod here, and since the best shooting location is braced against…[Read more]

dalethorn started the topic D-Lux typ 109 – Landscape – Bridge and Water in the forum Leica D-Lux 9 years, 11 months ago
The weather's been gloomy… Here's an example, shot on ‘P' (A+A for the D-Lux), where the bands of bright light in the sky forced a 1/2000 sec. shutter speed, yet the darker areas held up pretty well. With a lot of these kinds of images I shoot, the darker foliage will have the big “digital” squares of pixellation – perhaps due to shooting JPEG…[Read more]

dalethorn started the topic Rescued bird, D-Lux typ 109 in the forum Leica D-Lux 9 years, 11 months ago
Another rescued bird who banged into a window, warming up to fly. I have quite a few images from this great camera now, but haven't been able to work on them due to other projects getting in the way. The 800 ISO was accidental, since I was operating quickly and didn't check the settings. At f6.3, more of the bird should be in focus, but there…[Read more]

dalethorn replied to the topic Now comes the dilemma. to S or not to S? in the forum Leica S (Typ 006) 9 years, 12 months ago
Bob, I won't disagree that you can clean the sensor very well, but based on everything I've seen and read, it won't stay perfectly clean for a full shoot unless you don't change lenses. Assuming of course the entire interior is spotless along with the sensor. I'd like to hear how it goes when the OP gets it where he wants it and then goes to…[Read more]

dalethorn replied to the topic Now comes the dilemma. to S or not to S? in the forum Leica S (Typ 006) 9 years, 12 months ago
I didn't try cleaning the ‘S', but when I cleaned the Monochrom, after using a blower, a lot of stuff just wouldn't clean up. My inquiries got me the following advice: “Send to Leica for cleaning – the M series shutter etc. throws a lot of stuff onto the sensor” – quote approximate. The thing is, unless you're already an expert in cleaning those…[Read more]

I've found that shooting a plain blue sky, or plain white sky possibly, then viewing at 100 percent, you can see even the smallest dust.

My first butterfly with the Leica D-Lux(109) — the original image was 4112 pixels wide, which I cropped to 2200 wide and resized up slightly. I thought this was a really good example of image quality given the crop to only 3.6 mp.

Second day's images and impressions of the Leica D-Lux typ109 (twin of the Panasonic LX100). A couple things that I hope are fixed in new firmware are: 1) There's no ability to turn the camera on in playback mode AFAIK, which can lead to problems…. 2) The zoom resume feature causes a problem at turn-on when using the lenscap string when the…[Read more]

I sent a request for a detailed comparison of the S typ 007 and the S-E (both new models I presume). Given the astounding price difference, there must be significant compromises with the S-E, and I'd like to see the complete list.

The S-E has a one year warrantee vs three for the type 007
The S-E is really the same as the former type 006 introduced two years ago
The S-E is CCD sensor, the type 007 is CMOS so it has live view and higher ISO.
The 007 can take 4K video, etc. etc.
