Mark,
Great stuff! You should take advantage of the lights when you can as well. Your use of the available light is very good, keep working on it! - November 5, 2012 at 3:56 pm #3164
I am confident that Leica will answer with a fair and thoughtful solution. They have proven to be responsive to the customer needs and have shown above and beyond support with the M8 IR issue and M9 cracked sensor problems.
I purchased my lenses after the deadline, registered online and was allowed to download CS lens vouchers. I also saved them as a pdf on my computer, just in case :o. I bought into the system with the intention to use CS lenses, was told along the way by dealers that the old lenses would be upgraded even if the published deadline has passed. Verbal vs written contracts always favor the written so if Leica insists, the cut off date is Sept 2010. This would result in many angered owners and dealers with major PR issues on their hands.

David and Josh,
Please confirm this during your conversations with Leica management this week. - October 22, 2012 at 10:05 pm #3104
Have they changed their position on the upgrade process? I thought that there was no time limit on when you bought the original lens and was told just the opposite recently that there is a definite cut off date. So I checked on the owners area today and there indeed is a purchase by date of Sept 20, 2010. So it would appear that any lens purchased after that date are not eligible for the trade in program. In other words, all of my lenses 🙁 And the sad fact is that I bought the system with the CS lenses in mind and would have upgraded all of them to CS when they became available.
From the S Owners Area:
“With this S-System lens voucher, you can trade up any Leica S-System lens purchased on or before Monday 20th September 2010 to a new S lens of the same focal length with a central shutter. “

Jack,
Thanks for the great comparison shots! - September 18, 2012 at 12:39 am #2961
Roger,
The 180 3.4 was a great lens at infinity but not as good near-mid range as the Apo Elmarit. Also the near to far on the 3.4 was over one revolution if I recall. With the 1.4x + 180 you have quite a long lens in a small package for travel.I need to stop talking about this or my wallet will be much lighter!

. . .What is more amazing is the price is $1K less that the S2 with two extra years warranty. I think this is a first for Leica, lowering the price of a new, more featured camera!

Roger,
The CCD to CMOS is the uncertainty, will the files still have the nice rich look to it? As I understand, the sensor was made to Leica specifications so it should be a lot closer than the Sony generic sensor look.I could see a 180 Apo Elmarit and the M, nice and small for travel for a longer reach when needed. I am sure that more knock off adapters for other brands will pop up like mushrooms in the cow pasture after a rain.

Interesting tact – got rid of the S2P, put Gorilla Glass instead of sapphire and put a 3 year warranty on the camera. Much easier for the dealers to stock, and they can always add on the service package.
I don't know if it is enough for me to switch, ISO is marginally improved and I don't need GPS and don't use the LCD for championship chimping so my wallet is still secure.

David,
Nice shots and easy on the eyes so late in the day:o. The edge still goes to Leica in lens performance and one day, someday, they may have a fast 100 with central shutter that comes in at a reasonable price. But till that day comes you can have a reasonable substitute.-Al

Jack,
Nice images of Miller Park, the color shot was very nice as well! Interesting observation about sepia toned prints being more acceptable for corporate art. I guess design elements like the trusses work better as a graphic vs the full color beauty shot? It would be interesting to work with an interior designer to place those images around an office from a size and presentation perspective. I could see a mix of large graphic images like the trusses in sepia or B&W with color shots of the scenes around the park in the mix.-Al

Now I wonder about the 1.7x extender? Marc, thanks for the test with the HTS, eagerly await more tests with the other lenses.

Roger,
I think the biggest problem that the S2 had was poor product planning. Lenses were not readily available, lens family was not revealed, accessories kept secret. Now that it is older and some lenses available, the S3 has to hit a homerun in features in order to convince the public to buy into the system. The market for MFD can go with a complete system in Phase or Hasselblad or use the crystal ball to predict the S system. A complete system approach is far more desirable in the long run. Those waiting on the sidelines have many more choices today at less cost than the S system, you can only live on legend for a short time before you have to produce.
