Leica Store wrote a new post, Leica Announces the Leica M-P (Typ 240) Camera 10 years, 2 months ago
Today, Leica Camera has announced the new Leica M-P (Typ 240) camera in black paint and silver chrome. Similar in concept to the Leica M9-P and Leica M8.2, the Leica M-P (Typ 240) offers a number of new features and enhancements over the current Leica M (Typ 240). The new features include:
- Rear LCD screen made from scratch-resistant sapphire glass
- Larger, 2GB image buffer for longer continuous shooting
- Classic Leica look with removal of red Leica dot and “M” logo
- Leica script writing on top plate
- Frame line selector lever has been added
- Info button, directional pad, and thumb wheel “blacked out” on black paint model
- Removal of “Leica Camera Made in Germany” from rear of top plate
One feature that stands out is the increase in the camera's buffer to 2GB, which will allow for considerably more continuous shooting without interruption. This is a welcome upgrade and will certainly help differentiate the new M-P from the current M. A range of new camera protectors and ever ready cases have been introduced as well, to accommodate for the addition of the frame line selector lever on the front of the camera body. The official press release from Leica:
Leica Camera is proud to present the Leica M-P, an elegant, discrete and faster model to the M-System. Embodying the best of Leica M cameras, the Leica M-P has an unobtrusive appearance, appealing to professional photographers and avid Leica M users.
KEY BENEFITS & FEATURES
- Scratch resistant display-cover made of sapphire glass
- Long-lasting readiness to capture due to a large double sized image buffer of 2GB
- Pure look without the Leica Logo and “M” lettering on the front side
- Manual viewfinder frame selection with the traditional ‘frame selector‘
The large buffer size of 2GB makes it possible to shoot up to 24 images in full continuous speed of 3 frames per second. With such a buffer size, the new Leica M-P is ready to shoot at almost anytime, thus, the ‘decisive moment’ is never missed.
With the reduced, classic look, without the Leica logo, the Leica M-P has an unobtrusive appearance making it a professional tool with a unique identity. The sapphire glass is extremely scratch resistant and unbreakable, an appealing feature to professional photographers. Leica Camera is the only manufacturer that offers sapphire glass as acamera display protection. The Leica M-P has the classic image field selector which is another appealing feature to professional photographers and avid Leica M users.
The Leica M-P in silver chrome finish will be available from late August while the black paint finish version will be available from mid-September. There are new protectors and ever ready cases designed for the Leica M-P which will be available from mid-September. The new case designs will accommodate the frame selector on the M-P.
Current protectors and ever ready cases cannot be used with the Leica M-P. Other technical accessories such as the multi-functional handgrip M, electronic viewfinder EVF 2, R-Adapter M for the M (Typ 240) can be used with the Leica M-P.
To place an order for the Leica M-P (Typ 240) or with any questions, please call or email us anytime or check out our website.
josh speaks so rapidly (or the video has been speeded up) that I can barely understand what he is saying, much less take the information in. I gave up after a few minutes into video number two.
Pity, because I'd like to hear what he has to say.
Best regards,

Leica Store wrote a new post, Leica Announces the Leica Summicron-S 100mm f/2 ASPH 10 years, 2 months ago
Today, Leica Camera has announced the new Leica Summicron-S 100mm f/2 ASPH, equivalent to an 80mm lens in the 35mm camera system. This looks like it could be one of the more interesting lenses in the Leica S-System lineup. One could informally call it the “Noctilux for the Leica S-System” and we expect it to render the “Leica look” at its finest. It's the fastest S lens available; the only Summicron, and in fact is now one of the fastest medium format telephoto lenses available today. With it's minimum focus distance of 0.7 meters (28 inches) it will also work well as a macro lens. At 910 grams in weight, it is a bit lighter than the Leica Summarit-S 35mm f/2.5 ASPH (930 grams) which is a lens we've never had a problem hand-holding. Without the lens hood attached the overall length is 102mm (4 inches) which falls in between the length of the 35mm (122mm) and the S-70mm (93mm). More from Leica:
Leica Camera is pleased to introduce the Leica Summicron-S 100mm f/2 ASPH, a new addition to the Leica S-System. The lens is ideal for portrait, beauty, landscapes, and available light photography and corresponds to an 80mm lens in the 35mm system with a natural-looking perspective. The sophisticated lens engineering is optimized for perfect skin tones while maintaining the highest level of brilliance.
The Leica Summicron-S 100mm f/2 ASPH uses a sophisticated design where a total of 7 lens elements are used to achieve the highest optical performance. This meets the high expectations of the Leica S-System users of a professional tool.
There are three lens elements of glass with anomalous partial dispersion – another is made of high-refraction extra low dispersion glass for correction of chromatic aberrations. One double aspherical lens element minimizes monochromatic aberrations. A floating element moves independently to ensure the close range imaging capability of the lens.
The very elaborate construction is designed for maximum contrast performance even at full aperture, and at the nearest focusing distance keeps the lens free from artifacts. Chromatic aberrations are corrected to an absolute maximum.
The stable lens body and the perfect seal against dust and splash water guarantee durability and reliability.
It is important that the Leica S (Typ 006) has firmware version 2.4.0.0 and the Leica S2/S2-P has firmware version, 1.4.0.0 when using the Leica Summicron-S 100mm f/2 ASPH.
We expect this lens to be on display at Photokina and will have a full hands-on report from the show. To place a pre-order for this new lens, you can visit the Leica Store Miami website. Feel free to call or email us with any questions.

Leica Store wrote a new post, Leica Announces Leica Elmarit-S 45mm f/2.8 ASPH 11 years, 1 month ago
Today, Leica has announced the Leica Elmarit-S 45mm f/2.8 ASPH and the Leica Elmarit-S 45mm f/2.8 ASPH CS for the S-system. The official press release:
Leica Camera is pleased to introduce the Leica Elmarit-S 45mm f/2.8 ASPH and Leica Elmarit-S 45mm f/2.8 ASPH (CS) lenses to the S-System. These lenses are ideal for use in many different photography genres such as architecture, fashion, transportation, landscapes and photo journalism.
The Leica Elmarit-S 1:2.8 / 45 mm ASPH & CS version offer the following benefits:
- Maximum contrast reproduction & highest resolution even at full stop
- Excellent image quality at all apertures over the entire distance range provides crisp images
- Brilliant, pure color reproduction with minimal distortion
- Excellent for shooting in available light & targeted use of selective focus due to the high light intensity of 1:2:8
- Excellent stray light suppression for high-contrast images, even in backlight situations
- Lens hood optimally matched to beam light path and lens hood can be retracted for easy transportation
- Weather sealing protects the lens from common elements such as dust & water spray ensuring durability & reliability
This new lens has an equivalent angle of view as a 35mm lens on a full frame 35mm camera system with a natural looking perspective. The lens uses a very sophisticated design of 12 lenses to achieve the highest optical performance in the lens. There are three lenses of glass with anomalous partial dispersion and two more are made of highrefraction extra low dispersion glass for correction of chromatic aberrations. One aspherical surface on the front lens element minimizes monochromatic aberrations while a floating element moves independently to ensure the close range imaging capability of the lens. The elaborate construction enables maximum contrast even at full aperture and the smallest focusing distance. The design of the lens ensures that monochromatic aberrations are almost nonexistent and the chromatic aberrations are corrected to a minimum.

Leading up to the launch of the new X Vario, Leica rolled out a teaser campaign for what they were calling a “Mini M.” The campaign was quite effective at building up anticipation for this new camera. So much so […]
Great review.
I've had my X Vario for about 8 months now and just love it. Its so good that I added the new Leica X (type 113) to fill in those few situations (very low light, shallow depth of field) where the X Vario struggles. The two together make for an outstanding travel kit that covers about 95% of everything and anything that I would want to photograph.
Very late catching up with this but found it an enormous pleasure to read highlightingfor me what I have found so good abot the XV in the last two years of ownership. It goes into hibernation in the winter but is otherwise my absolutely favourite camera for image quality and haptics. The latter I have considerable improved by adding a thin strip of metal with a bottom ridge in the same colour as the control wheel. harmonises perfectly and has completely removed false activation of the flash contact. Much more useful than the auxiliary hand grip. I shoot mainly jpegs and the XV is the camera on which I have least pp adjustment to do.

Today, Leica Camera has released a statement about the delivery situation regarding the Leica M (Typ 240):Since its presentation at the photokina 2012, the new Leica M has become extremely popular. The large number of orders we have received shows the outstanding acceptance of the new M-System on the market. The enormous demand has by far exceeded our expectations, with the consequence that delays in deliveries can unfortunately not be avoided.
In the words of Markus Limberger, COO at Leica Camera AG: “We are very sorry about these delays and hope you will understand the current situation. Please rest assured that we are investing an enormous amount of time and effort in the sustainable expansion of our production capacities, naturally in full compliance with our commitment to absolute quality. Despite the very high demand, particularly of the Leica M, the quality of our products and the high-precision in our production maintains our high standard.”
A significant cause for the longer waiting times is Leica’s uncompromising manufacturing process in accordance with the ‘factory’ principle. Just like all other Leica products, the Leica M is manufactured and assembled in an elaborate manual process that must satisfy the most stringent demands on precision engineering, painstaking care and quality. Each Leica M is a handcrafted product in every detail and may only leave the factory after being tested, checked and adjusted for so long until its flawless finish and performance are guaranteed and fulfill the exhaustive quality demands on which the worldwide reputation of Leica is founded. This commitment to precision and quality has been the the core principle of Leica manufacturing for almost a century. The endurance, reliability and perceived value of Leica products have been instrumental in the creation of the Leica legend.
To ensure that we can continue to maintain these uncompromising quality standards and simultaneously reduce order-fulfillment times, Leica Camera AG is currently significantly expanding production capacities, creating job opportunities for additional specialists and trainees, and is building a completely new, ultra-modern factory that will open in Wetzlar in 2014 with facilities to satisfy production demand. The sum total of these measures will relieve pressures in the production process and simultaneously lead to considerably shorter order-fulfillment times.
We're hopeful that deliveries of the camera will increase over the coming months. The response of users who have managed to obtain a camera has been overwhelmingly positive, and we'll be posting a full M review here soon!

Leica Store wrote a new post, Leica Announces S-Adapter-C for Contax 645 Lenses 11 years, 5 months ago
Today, Leica has announced the Leica S-Adapter-C, which allows Contax 645 AF lenses to be mounted on a Leica S system camera (S2, S2-P, or S typ 006) with full functionality, including auto focus and aperture control. From Leica:
Leica Camera is pleased to introduce the Leica S-Adapter C which will be available from this June. With this adapter, Contax 645 lenses can be used with the Leica S (Typ 006), Leica S2 and Leica S2-P cameras. The adapter enables owners of the Contax 645 system to switch effortlessly to the Leica S System.
The Leica S-Adapter C when used with Contax 645 lenses on any of the Leica S cameras offers the following:
- Autofocus and manual focus with focus confirmation
- Automatic aperture
- Using the EXIF data of lenses of Contax 645 system
- Use of corrective lens profiles for the Contax 645 system when converting the RAW files in Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop.
When using the adapter with Contax 645 lenses, the aperture is selected with the manual mode or the automatic setting of the camera.
Stefan Pick, Contax photographer for many years, was the first to test the S-Adapter C in conjunction with the Leica Stand Contax 645-lenses. Stefan Pick said, “Initially, I was pessimistic about the adapter solution, but already from the first use I was enormously surprised how quickly and how well the auto focus on the Leica S works – faster than on Contax system in the past. The image quality as a result of the combination of Contax lenses on the Leica S is gigantic. Therefore, the connection of the Leica S with the Leica S-Adapter C is an extremely affordable entry-level solution to the Leica S-System and a better quality solution as a digital back, for photographers who own the Contax lenses from the past.”
The Leica S-Adapter C supports the following lenses from the Contax 645 system:
- Distagon T* 3.5 / 35 mm
- Distagon T* 2.8 / 45 mm
- Distagon T* 3.5 / 55 mm
- Planar T* 2.0 / 80 mm
- Apo-Makro-Planar T* 4 / 120 mm

- Tele-Apotessar T* 4 / 350 mm
- Vario-Sonnar T* 4.5 / 45-90 mm
- Mutar 1.4x T*
- Auto Extension Ring 13 mm
- Auto Extension Ring 26 mm
- Auto Extension Ring 52 mm
The Leica S-Adapter C does not support auto-focus for the following components:
- Apo-Makro-Planar T*4 / 120 mm as it is a MF lens
