Blasting in the quarry. Then loaded onto trucks for transportation to the primary crusher. Then to the secondary crusher via a belt conveyor. Iron ore is classified into three categories (calibrated/lumpy; coarse; fine). It is then washed, screened, and discharged on a belt conveyor. It is loaded into road or rail wagons. Iron ore is also classified and sold by iron content.

Iron ore mining begins at ground level. Taconite is identified by diamond drilling core samples on a grid hundreds of feet into the ground. Taconite rock contains about 28 percent iron; the rest is sand or silica. These samples are analyzed and graded so mining engineers can accurately develop a mining plan. Most companies use free-fall chisel to mine one type of ore or another. Chisels are used in a fairly narrow range of all companies in this field, but without one, your work would be considered ineffective.
