I had lunch today with fellow poster Kurt Kamka, just back for a visit to the United States from the streets of Manila in the Philippines where he has been photographing this past year.
He had told me that he would bring along an art book of some of his latest work called “Free Smiles”. The book is 250 pages of fantastic street photos from Manila, shot with his S2 in Black and White.
He is too modest, so let me toot his horn for him.

I encouraged him to comment here on his technique for getting people to allow him to photograph them so openly with a good sized camera, when they speak Spanish, and he speaks English.
I have never seen such a wonderfully thick art book, much less one that has so many excellent photos. So I naturally took a few shots of him with his book, shown here.
Is it possible that my photos of Kurt were taken with yet to be released Monochrome S3 with pancake 50mm lens? Perhaps it should be called the Leica S&M. No, they were shot with an S2 with a 35mm.
Let’s encourage Kurt to post some more of his shots from the book on Red Dot.

As I mentioned to Jack, I have a gallery showing coming up in Manila in October … so it’ll be exciting to see what local reactions will be to my slices of Filipino daily life. In addition, I have another tentatively scheduled for March of next year that will be a mixed media show with a Filipino painter who will be painting over and rearranging a few of my photos into his own interpretations as an East meets West collaboration.
One small note, not much Spanish in the Philippines despite the 300 years of occupation. It’s either Tagalog (Filipino) or English. The last occupation by Americans has made English the predominate business language … so it’s very easy to get around the country for English speakers.
