Leica has just introduced the ZM 12, the latest addition to its growing range of wristwatches. Short for “Zeitmesser”- the German word for “timepiece” – the ZM series showcases a blend of Swiss horology and Leica’s renowned design philosophy. When launched at the end of 2023, the ZM 11 showcased bold and sporty styling in a 41mm size. The ZM 12 refines this vision with a more compact 39mm case, offering a sleeker and more versatile fit. With the omission of the small date window and move from a sweeping central seconds hand to a small seconds subdial at 6-o'clock, the ZM 12 shares the same underlying aesthetic of its larger sibling but with a unique identity all its own.

The Leica ZM 12 watches maintain the distinctive dual-layer dial design under a domed sapphire crystal first introduced with the ZM 11 but opts for a more compact 39mm case size, crafted from either Grade 5 titanium or 316L stainless steel. This subtle reduction in size aims to enhance wearability while maintaining the durability Leica is known for. All ZM 12 models are rated to 10ATM, which equates to 100m or 330ft, making them perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or lounging in the hot tub after a long day of photography.

The Dial

The ZM 12 dial is a testament to Leica’s attention to detail, craftsmanship, and design inspiration drawn from the world of photography. Constructed from two solid brass layers, the dial undergoes a meticulous 30-step manufacturing process that includes etching, grinding, polishing, and hand-lacquering of the grill edges. This intricate process creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, a nod to the interplay of light and shadow on a camera’s shutter

Each dial features a sunburst finish, adding depth and brilliance to the watch face. Grade A Super-LumiNova infilled stick indices along with hashed markings on the rehaut make for easy reading and a clean look. The small seconds subdial, featuring a concentric circle pattern, enhances the watch’s overall symmetry, offering a modern and sophisticated aesthetic. The result is a visually striking timepiece that shifts in color and texture depending on the viewing angle and ambient lighting conditions.

Precision Swiss Movement

Departing from the ‘Made in Germany' limited production ethos of the ZM 1 and ZM 2, Leica again opted for a customized Swiss-made movement developed in collaboration with Chronode SA to make the Leica Calibre LA-3002 self-winding movement powering the ZM12. Beating at 28,800 bph, the new movement has a generous 60-hour power reserve and an impressive accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day, measured in five positions, which is in line with COSC standards.

Viewed through the edge-to-edge sapphire glass display back, the movement is downright gorgeous and right in-line with Leica's design aesthetic, with sandblasted surfaces, brushed chamfers and striking dark grey galvanic Ruthenium plating on the bridges and rotor. It's understated yet impressive all at the same time, with a mix of dark tones and polished surfaces.

Easy Change System

First introduced on the ZM 11, the ZM 12 also features the innovative Easy-Change locking system, allowing for effortless switching between different strap options, including stainless steel, titanium, rubber, and fabric. The mechanism is integrated into the lugs section of the case, with the bands holding simple counter-pieces that interlock, ensuring a safe connection. To release the strap, simply press the red dot on the underside, mirroring the lens release button found on Leica M cameras. This intuitive design adds a sense of familiarity and elegance to the strap-changing process.

Four Variations

Building on the foundation of the ZM 11, the ZM 12 offers four striking dial variations, housed in either stainless steel or Grade 5 titanium, paired with one of the four strap options, it's easy to change up the look and get some incredible combinations:

ZM 12 Steel Blue Orange – A vibrant mix of deep blue and striking orange accents, providing a bold yet sophisticated look.

ZM 12 Steel Silver Grey – A timeless monochrome design with subtle contrast, exuding refined elegance.

ZM 12 Steel Olive Black – A unique fusion of dark greenish-black tones for a sophisticated yet understated aesthetic.

ZM 12 Titanium Chocolate Black – A rich, warm brown dial housed in a lightweight titanium case, perfect for those who appreciate classic design.

Timeless elegance in 39 mm – with small seconds and four unique dial options.

Teaneck, February 27, 2025 – The launch of the new Leica ZM 12 watch collection refines the essence of simplicity, staying true to Leica’s design principles with a fresh take on minimalism. Building on the foundation of the ZM 11, the ZM 12 introduces a thoughtful evolution of the dual-layered dial, welcoming a new collective of Leica lovers with its smaller size. With every second, it serves as a reminder to look at things from a new perspective.

A modern interpretation of iconic design, the Leica ZM 12 collection strikes the perfect balance between form and function. Among the key distinctions between the ZM 11 and the ZM 12 collections is the smaller 39 mm case, crafted with stainless steel or titanium, depending on the model. The watches feature classic timekeeping functions with a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, adding symmetry to the overall aesthetic. The dual-layered dial comes to life through an interplay of light and shadow, creating depth and allowing the ZM 12 to captivate from various angles in an exploration of color. Swiss Grade A Super-LumiNova illuminates the indices and hands, ensuring exceptional legibility even in challenging lighting conditions.

Engineered in close collaboration with the renowned Swiss movement specialists at Chronode, the exceptional automatic Leica Calibre LA-3002 is fitted with 38 jewels. The ZM 12 impresses with a timekeeping accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day and boasts a remarkable power reserve of approximately 60 hours. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour and is measured in five positions to ensure the highest precision at all times.

“Every addition to the ZM Watch Collection is an opportunity to showcase our philosophy of merging technical excellence with minimalist design,” said Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Leica Camera AG.

The Leica ZM 12 collection includes four models, each offering its own unique character: the ZM 12 Steel Blue Orange, the ZM 12 Steel Silver Grey, the ZM 12 Steel Olive Black, and the ZM 12 Titanium Chocolate Black.

Interchangeable straps provide wearers with the flexibility to personalize their watch aesthetic, allowing them to express their individual style or transform their look to suit the occasion. Each strap is meticulously handcrafted in Leica’s artisanal workshop, blending modern technology with traditional craftsmanship. Two exceptional materials have been used to create the watch straps. The first is a premium technical textile, durable and resilient, offering exceptional strength and longevity. The beige fabric features a unique, eye-catching pattern that adds a touch of sophistication to the wrist. The second is high-quality rubber, crafted from a robust material offering excellent durability and comfort. Its bright orange hue and distinctive inverted “Clou de Paris” pattern make it ideal for those looking to make a bold style statement.

For over 150 years, Leica has been synonymous with innovation, engineering excellence, and timeless design.
