It was one of those overcast days here in Seattle, a drizzle here and there with sun breaks. So I took a walk down to Pike Place Market to do some shooting with the S2 and 180. This was an interesting exercise for me, I usually shoot there with an M9 and 28 or 50, getting close to people and they really don’t notice me amongst the armada of DSLRs and camera phones. With the S2, I got a lot more stares but was able to blend in because of all of the cameras around. Also using the 180, I felt more of a voyeur than a participant in the image. Something for me to get used to I guess.

The first shot is a 1:2 crop with the composition and focus the way I want it. I had an instructor in college, Bob Stein, who used to come to your stage and critique your composition. He would take your 4×5 Polaroid and commence to folding that image till it was about the size of a postage stamp and hand it back to you with “that’s your image”. So Mr. Stein, this one is for you. The second is the whole image as shot.

The next image is one of the long time vendors – the balloon guy

Another tribute to Mr. Stein, this one is cropped in tight after the fact, the S2 allows a lot more freedom to crop thank goodness.

I’m glad to see you picked up the 180mm. It seems to be working well for you. The 180mm is an exceptional lens.

Good choice to wander Pike Place Market… one never knows what interesting things may be seen. 🙂 I particularly like your first (cropped) shot of the stringed-instrument player, a very nice contextual portrait, IMO.

    Doug,
Pike Place Market is my backyard so to speak, I enjoy going there mainly to do my grocery shopping and doing some people work. I am working on a project shooting the flowers in the market through the seasons.

If you are planning a trip to Seattle drop me a line and we can get together.

Thanks, Al! The Public Market used to be a favorite photo destination for me in the late 60’s when I lived on Capitol Hill and shopped cameras at Olympic Camera on 4th. And even after I moved to more distant parts of Seattle. It has changed a lot over the years. For that matter the whole waterfront area was a gold mine of photo opportunities. Trekking around there I’d often carry both an M2 with 35/2 plus a Spotmatic with 85mm.
