Today, Leica has released a major firmware update for the SL3. This firmware update introduces new features and a sweeping amount of notable improvements, both in features and performance. The UI has been further refined for more intuitive operation. The joystick and rear thumbwheel gain additional functionality. Viewfinder blackout has been minimized and continuous shooting See below for a full listing of changes.

NEW

White Balance/Video ISO Lock:

Added lock function for white balance settings Auto ISO and Auto WB. This function ensures a constant ISO value and automatic white balance during video recording until recording is stopped, or settings are changed via menu settings.

Joystick – Additional assignment options:

Factory setting: AFs

Magnification is now also available for MF lenses and Leica M lenses.

Joystick – Additional function Click and Hold for AF-L, AE-L, and AF-L + AE-L:

In the Click setting, the joystick will no longer need pressing and holding, and will be simply activated and deactivated with a single click instead.

Joystick – Additional function for the joystick assignment:

When AF-ON is selected for the joystick, AF metering via the shutter button is deactivated. The metering function is instead activated by pressing the joystick.

IMPROVEMENT

User profile:

Preparation for future firmware updates. Updates for Version 2.0.0 and later will automatically apply existing settings for User profiles, Language, Time and Date.

Thumbwheel:

New functionality as function button

Perspective Control:

The perspective control function is now also available in continuous shooting mode for 2 fps, 4 fps, and 5 fps.

Continuous Shooting:

The start delay for the setting 15 fps was reduced by 700ms.

Control Center:

Optimization of the connectivity icons and their positioning in the Control Center for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cable

Storage options:

The storage option DNG+JPG on CFe=SD (Backup) was optimized. A warning message will be displayed that no backup option is available if one of the two memory cards is unavailable for functional or capacity reasons.

User profile:

The setting for AF field size will now be taken into consideration when creating a backup of the user profile.

Camera menu:

Improved menu guidance with the introduction of the new button “Back” at the top left corner of the camera menu.

The WLAN menu item has become part of Camera Settings.

Capture mode:

Blackout time for single shots was improved from approx. 310ms to around 250ms.

Review mode:

Improved user interaction for the deletion of multiple shots.

Connecting to Leica FOTOS App:

The problem of Leica FOTOS being unable to connect if another smartphone was already connected to the camera via Wi-Fi was remedied.

EXIF 3.0:

Support for EXIF 3.0 and the GPS version 2.4.0.0 was added.

Mechanical shutter speeds:

When using the hybrid shutter, the camera will now use the mechanical shutter for the speeds 1/5000s, 1/6400s, and 1/8000s.

Firmware Files

To download the firmware file, simply click the buttons below. You'll need to drag and drop the downloaded firmware file onto an SD card which was freshly formatted in the SL3, then insert the card into your camera with a fully charged battery. Navigate to the Camera Information menu to access the firmware update option. Don't try to open the firmware file on your computer – just copy it onto the SD card into the root directory. Installation Instructions

  1. Recharge the battery to 100% and insert the battery into the camera.
  2. Remove SD and CFe cards from the camera.
  3. Prepare a SD card for installation:
    a. It is recommended to format the memory card inside the camera.
    b. Make sure that the card contains at least 200 MB of free disk space.
    c. Copy the firmware file to the root directory of the SD card (not in a folder).
    d. Insert the SD card into the SL3.
  4. Switch on the camera.
  5. Open the Camera Information menu item in the main menu. Under Camera Firmware Version you can see the version of the currently installed firmware and you can install the new firmware under Start Update.
  6. Confirm the update process if you want to start by selecting Yes.
    a. The camera will guide you through the process of updating your camera.
    b. Please confirm to save your current settings to SD card before proceeding with the update.
    c. The camera starts the update process and informs you when finished.
    d. Restart the camera; do not eject the SD card.
    e. After the welcome video you can select the language.
    f. You now can do some settings via the Leica FOTOS App by connecting the camera with the app. If you have already connected the SL3 to the app, delete it from the app and connect the camera again
  7. The update process is completed successfully.
  8. If you want to load your user profiles go to the menu item User Profile in the main menu and then Manage Profiles. With Import Profiles you can restore your profiles to the camera again.

Important notes:

  • Any interruption of a running firmware update may cause serious and irreparable damage to your equipment!
  • You will therefore have to take particular note of the following, when carrying out a firmware update:
  • Do not switch off the camera!
  • Do not remove the memory card!
  • Do not remove the rechargeable battery!
  • Do not detach the lens!
  • Do not open the cover/remove the memory card or the battery from the camera while the status LED is lit, which indicates memory access. Data on the card may otherwise be destroyed and camera malfunctions may occur.
