    Dale,

I would like to respecfully disagree…have been cleaning sensors since the Nikon D70 and not had a problem…yes you may use a half box of wipes but in 30 minutes you are
done and have the camera at your side not…on the way to or from NJ or Solms.

Need to exercise a bit of discretion and a modicum of physical acuity and restraint…dont dig at the sensor but they really are not as fragile as most suspect.

Lens changes should be done with the camera off and inverted….if the lens is clean the amount of deritrus introduced is minimal.

And thank Adobe for the healing brush…for those little elements that may exist on a long holiday or wild landscape safari….

Best not to try a cleaning in the bush…deal with the inevitable spots and address the issue at home….no clean room needed …. just mount the camera on a stable
tripod … use a sensor scope and plan on throwing a number of swabs out to get a decent result.

    David,

I am following this closely as my Move 1200 pack arrived this past week…upgrade from the
    Mobil LED set.

Have not had a chance to use it yet but could not pass up the extra battery and the RFS2
transmitter…not the Profoto AIR but better than the RFS original.

I'm looking for experiences where such a thing has happened, and there was some way to recover them.

This was a 32 gig Sandisk card purchased from B&H, so highly unlikely a counterfeit.

Frankly, hearing that Sandisk cards have failed on you like this is surprising and doesn't inspire much confidence in using this camera for paying work where there are no second chances.

One reason I didn't worry about it was the dual card parallel capture.

That both cards failed makes me wonder how this camera captures the redundant jpg file to the SD card. Is it generated from the DNG CF capture, or is it a separate dual feed?

The files I was shooting WERE showing up on the LCD, so how the heck could I have known it was malfunctioning?

    Depressing to say the least.

Over 500 images captured during the 10 hours, and these 50 or so will ruin the entire shoot no matter how good the others are.

    Marc,

I imagine that nothing is more distressing than losing pictures for a client…unless it is for family that you will see FOREVER….

Had similar issues years back as the CD–>DVD formats evolved.

There is one program that will recover files from seemingly nothing….it saved some 2000 scans of mine that were unreadable on three separate archives.

ISOBUSTER is a bit rough but that is why it works so well….

    Here is a link…

    http://www.isobuster.com/linux-mac.php

Runs on PCs but I still use it on Parallels within OS X.

If they exist it will find them….even if they were fragmented. Many times the files are there but the small DB file that links them has been corrupted…ISOBUSTER ignores this and looks for patterns and data it can interpret without the pointers.

BTW nothing is close to Sandisk in my book…will not even consider another due to bad experiences years ago…as long as they are not knockoffs.

Loaner camera body….not a good consumer relation point for Leica.

    Hope this is of help.

    Regards,

    Bob

    Doug,

With you technique you would be fine…overjoyed with the output I am sure.

I used a Leica S-2P with Pentax 300 EDIF F4 lens on an adapter for the following shots….both manual focus on a monopod.

The Heron shot was very low light and was across the lake as they spook very easily here in Texas….the Mallard in better light and somewhat closer.

So the Contax 350 should give you more reach and better contrast but manageable with your experience.

    • The warranty on the S (Typ 006) is 3 years. It is fully transferable and includes a loaner camera during the duration of any repair, delivered within 24 hours. Essentially, the S (Typ 006) warranty is the same as the Platinum warranty, but for a full 3 years, instead of the 2 years that came with the S2-P.

To throw our own hat in the ring, I'd like to remind everyone that we (Leica Store Miami/Dale Photo & Digital) are one of the best sources anywhere for the Leica S System. We have close connections with product managers in Germany, an ongoing dialog with Leica service and support here in the US, lead S System photo workshops and, most importantly, actually shoot extensively with the system ourselves. Wehave even engineered our own Leica S accessories when no such solutions existed from Leica. The S has been a personal passion of mine from the moment it was announced.

For trade-ins, we give 80% of market value. We are completely open and transparent with this policy so that everyone is on the same page and gets the best deal possible. If we think a customer would do better selling on their own, we advise them as such and will offer guidance on the best approach to do so.

    David,

I apologize for mentioning another site for trades…hesitated but assumed that your interest in non-Leica stuff might be limited.

Marc is aware and for those who are not let me agree that you and Josh have been a wonderful source of S Leica information and support…I had one of you original P67 adapters with my S-2P. In fact, I returned here to search out S DNGs in assessing the new camera after learning about the rebate.

Again looking forward to working with you and Leica Store Miami in the future.

thanks for sharing your thoughts. My experiences mirror yours in that not much else satisfies …

Maybe the better question is where the heck do I wholesale off all this stuff?

Still thinking, where there is a will, there is a way.

P.S., the Dunedin suggestion is a good one : -)

    Marc,

Sean at Camera West has been and remains the best source for turning old equipment into usable credit…never had better response, valuations, or advice…he has two stores in
    Rancho Mirage and Walnut Creek….

Might be worth the effort…and I have sent and received huge amounts of stuff…dollar wise and number wise. He recently quoted me an amount which I deemed generous but he sent me another email correcting what he thought was a low evaluation of the value…some 20% higher…without any input on my part.

Old stuff sitting in the studio or in my case the closet does not work well…

Now I am considering taking Leica up on their promo deal to perpetuate what I love about the S2P for at least the next 3 to 4 years … plus gain a few of the functional improvements the S brings to the party … most of which I consider marginal, but useful in real world terms.

The S warranty is apparently 1 year, but can be extended to 3 years … but at what cost?

It isn't that there is anything wrong with my S2P … and I'd love to add the CS45/2.8 and Elpro for the 180, but can't do both financially.

    Whatdoyathink?

    – Marc

    Marc,

I just ordered a new S through the promo to replace my S2-P which I sold last year…and have not been satisfied with much else in the interim. The deal really brings the camera back into a competitive standing in my opinion price wise. I ended up trading off a lot of stuff and do not think I will miss it with the new body.

According to Sean at Camera West the warranty is 2 years … and should be able to be extended … not sure if it is the overnight loaner deal on the S2-Ps but if you are doing less commercial stuff that may not be as important to you.

The 45 sounds great but I believe you have the majority of the lenses around that focal length? The elpro may be worth the small expense for your 180.

I actually downloaded a couple of DNGs from here and looking at the 1600 iso shots I will have little need for a CMOS(is) chip…as I will only be looking at the CS lenses – well the 120 TS is not available as a CS but otherwise I can drag my Bron Mobil A2L along if I need it.

As you have mentioned elsewhere even if the new camera does everything perfectly it may be one or two FW revisions before you would be completely happy with it. Plenty of time to enjoy the S…my only thought is I wish they had left the sapphire cover …

The new joystick control, ISO in VF, and faster buffer alone may make the camera seem more alive … functionally the older S2(-P) was great.

I would vote for the new S and Dunedin rather than the tropics…at least next year.

I would never cable connect a camera…unless shooting tethered.

Break the connector off goes the camera…break the card reader and replace it in twenty minutes from eight different stores near home, or when traveling.

    Kurt,

My local dealer finally received one…it is everything you imagine and then some.

I may well sell off 90 percent of my stuff and concentrate on the mono and the new M.

    It really is that good.
